LETTER FROM THE CAMPUS HEAD

Dear St George’s Family

Every Thursday at 09:30 I do look forward to the 30-minute appointment that I have with my SMILE group. It is a time in the week when I can put my phone away, leave the laptop and sit around a table and talk, and more importantly, listen!

I shared a story with my boys and girls today about my trip home from my parents house this past Sunday evening. At the corner of Circular Drive and William Moffet traffic lights, whilst waiting for the lights to change, there was a young boy probably no older than 8, maybe 9, sitting on the curb. You will all remember the weather that particular night; windy, wet and possibly the coldest evening we have had this winter. As the lights changed green I caught his eyes and continued driving as it was dark and raining and I was eager to get home. The whole way down Walmer Main Road, in my vehicle with heated seats and my son playing DJ from his iPhone through the car’s sound system, I could not shake the look of the little boy’s face. I still feel guilty as I write this letter that I didn’t do anything. Ironically, for the past month at that very same junction, I keep on saying to my boys, that one day when I am big I would love to own the Mercedes Sports Car (I think it is an AMG GT R Coupe) on display opposite the road to where the young boy was sitting that night.

So why do I share this story with you?  Unlike the picture above, I think too often we are comparing ourselves to others and this we often do by comparing “up”! Perhaps we need to start comparing “down” and in that way, perhaps we will really start to have a better appreciation of ourselves and a far firmer understanding of our own privilege.

That moment at a traffic light made me stop, think and really be grateful for the car I drive, the hot meal I just ate, the family in the car with me, the warm house on Villiers Road, the job I have and the wonderful privilege I have fortunately been blessed with.  I am going to stop looking at that Mercedes Benz from now on and I hope that the little boy may be there again some time soon and this time I will do something!

May you all have a wonderful weekend!

Kind regards
Alex Hall – Campus Head

Pupils and staff at St George’s are buzzing with excitement as we prepare for our upcoming production – “Into the Woods Junior”.

The show, consisting of approximately 100 pupils, runs from Wednesday 19 September to Friday 21 September with performances at 11h30 and 18h00 daily in the Jan Immelman Hall.

“Into The Woods Junior” features all of your favourite characters – Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (and his beanstalk) and the Witch in this lyrically rich retelling of classic Brothers Grimm fables. The musical centers on a baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King’s festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a witch’s curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse and wind up changed forever.

Pupils, staff, parents & friends of St George’s are hard at work preparing for the live musical production “Into the Woods Junior” which comes alive on the St George’s Prep stage from 19th – 21st September.
