St George’s

Library

Our Library is situated on the ground floor of the Carol Arts and Media Centre. The library is a surprisingly busy place, and this year has seen our beautiful new library being used to its full potential.

One of the prime goals of a school library is to encourage a love of reading, and the constant addition of new titles to our collection (you can never have enough Wimpy Kid books!) and use of incentives such as the Reading Badges for children in Grades 6 and 7 supports this.

Grade 1’s come for a story time from the 3rd term every year, Grade 2’s take out books from the 2nd term, Grade 3s take out books from the 1st term, and Grades 4 – 7 take out books and receive instruction in the use of libraries, books and media.  On the Information Skills side the children make use of the iPad bank for research, and learn about using a library and how to make notes.

Our serious readers take part in the annual international Kids’ Lit Quiz – the Eastern Cape leg of the quiz is hosted at our school.

Books2You, a travelling bookstore from Durban, visits us annually, transforming the library into a bookshop for the day, giving children and parents an opportunity to browse and buy books.

Chess takes place in the library, and it also provides the venue for staff meetings, board meetings and other school related activities.
