Letter from the Campus Head

19 July 2019

Dear St George’s Family

Welcome back to Term 3 which promises to be a busy happy Term for all our boys and girls.

Yesterday was certainly a day that we remembered Nelson Mandela as a nation as well as internationally as millions of people dedicated at least 67 minutes of service to commerorate the birthday of the World’s most famous passed Statesman.  With the sad news of Johnny Clegg finally succumbing to his battle with cancer on the 16th of July, I can’t help but rekindle the lyrics of so many of his wonderful songs on a day like yesterday!  The tribute to Johnny Clegg, “The Crossing” was performed by many of South Africa’s famous musicians in 2018 and certainly stirs the souls of all of us with Africa in our heart.  This tribute can be found on this link.

The lyrics, “Inside of him a boy looks up to his father, for a sign or an approving eye, oh, it’s funny how those once so close and now gone can still so affect our lives”, ring true to both Johnny Clegg and Nelson Mandela and are a sage reminder to us all that our children do watch us and one day will mimic the behaviours we display to them on a daily basis.

As has become a tradition, St George’s Prep and Pre-Prep celebrated Mandela Day today with various 67 minute outreach programmes.

Pre-Prep and Grade 1 children made sandwiches at school and donated the sandwiches to the Walmer Methodist church to add to their feeding scheme.

Grade 2 classes visited and donated second hand children’s books and sports equipment to the Shine Literacy Centre at Walmer Junior School.  The Shine Literacy Centre offers a support programme to Walmer Junior School. They provide support to the children from Grade R to Grade 3 to help strengthen their English, reading, writing and speaking skills.

The Grade 3’s visited Pollock Beach, doing a 67 minute beach clean-up, followed by a “Pirate Picnic”.  The pupils came dressed up as pirates for the day and they also participated in various activities throughout the day.

Grade 4 pupils walked to Nazareth House to deliver biscuit treats made at school.  They also supported SANCCOB and Animal Welfare Society, which was not compulsory.  SANCCOB was in need of money or refreshments for their volunteers who assisted with the cleaning of the penguins affected by the oil spill.  Animal Welfare needed food for the animals as they had a big intake of abandoned puppies.

Grade 5’s outreach was doing a St George’s Park clean-up.  They also supported SANCCOB with the Algoa Bay oil spill, providing any refreshments or snacks for the volunteers or monetary donations.

The Grade 6 pupils donated their time and made alphabet friezes during the week for three classes at Heatherbank and we are sure the children will love their new hand-made educational resources.

The Grade 7’s dropped off the ‘teddies” they made during Technology class in Term 2 to Heatherbank School and  stayed a while to spend time with the children. We hope that you all had a wonderful Mandela Day and we look forward to a busy term ahead!

Staff News

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Mr Craig Carter (Prep) at the end of August and Mrs Ninette Carter (Pre-Prep) at the end of the year.  We wish them all the best in their new life in England.  Mr Carter has been with us since April 2016 as Head of our Senior Prep and a Grade 7 class teacher.  His contribution to the Prep Senior Management Team has also been invaluable! Mr Carter will be taking up a position in a London School at the start of October and will be sorely missed.  Mrs Carter joined the Pre-Preparatory in January 2018 as a Grade R teacher. She will be joining Mr Carter in London, at the start of 2020 as they begin a wonderfully exciting new adventure together.  Mrs Carter certainly has left her mark at the Pre-Prep during her short time with us and will also be missed.

Juffrou Elrica Scholtz, Grade 6 Class teacher and Afrikaans Teacher, will be taking Long Leave for Term 3 and we welcome back Mrs Liezel Ristow who will be filling in for her.

We welcome Miss Debra Young as a new Junior Prep Intern, replacing Miss Makayla Lottering, who will assist in the Grade 1 classrooms and with coaching.

Congratulations to Pete and Lucy McNaughton on the birth of twin daughters, Olivia Lyn and Lexi Diana McNaughton on the 18th of June.

We’re very proud of these two staff members – Dayne Samboer has been selected for the Garden Route Gazelles PHL Team and Anton Peltenburg has been appointed as the EP Men’s Hockey Coach – well done gents!

“St George’s Cares” Prayer Group – Pre-Prep AND Prep parents welcome to Join

Who is St George’s Cares?

St George’s Cares consists of a small group of Christians whose primary objective is to provide prayer and moral support for children, teachers and administrators.  We believe in God’s ability and willingness to help and to bless.

St George’s Cares can be called upon in confidence at any time for emotional, spiritual or practical support.

The vision of St George’s Cares is to build a wall of prayer for our school, to bless the children.

We would love for you to join us if you share the same vision for our children and school.
We will be meeting every second Wednesday at the Prep school (meet in the foyer) from 7:50 – 8:30 to pray, starting on Wednesday 31 July.

If you are interested and would like more details, please email either Anusha Sewsunker at, anush@drsewsunker.co.za or Louise Goatè at louisegoate@gmail.com
