LETTER FROM THE CAMPUS HEAD

13 May 2019

Dear St George’s Family

The Senior Prep has been a hive of excited activity since the start of the year. This has led to a positive learning environment and a truly collaborative effort between staff and pupils. It is this collaboration between staff and pupils that makes St George’s Prep such an amazing place to experience their educational journey.

The journey we have undertaken over the past two years to establish a more cross curricular, skills based, problem solving and real-world associated curriculum incorporating technology, traditional practices and a variety of teaching approaches which have most certainly paid their dividends.

It is therefore with great interest that I have noted a number of recent articles published about the usage of iPads in schools, with some now removing them completely and moving back to textbooks. It is never a good idea to simply follow one approach in the classroom and there are a plethora of arguments from both sides, each with their own merits.

It is for this reason that from the outset, St George’s Prep decided on a blended approach throughout our school. This pedagogical approach appreciates the fact that all pupils are unique and therefore will be unique in their learning styles too. It allows pupils to be active, bringing about a shift from lectures to pupil-centred-learning. By using a combination of traditional place-based classroom practices and more modern technology online based interaction, pupils experience a wide range of different approaches and media. We use Google Classroom as our online platform and whatever is added to our online classroom will be available in print too.

This approach allows us to prepare children for the future, equipping them with the necessary technological skills they will need in the work place whilst developing problem solving, critical thinking and creative attributes that will be needed in an ever changing world whilst retaining and building on the essential core skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening.

We firmly believe that children leaving St George’s Prep are some of the most well prepared pupils in the country and can step into the future with confidence knowing that they have been equipped with the necessary skills to cope in the ever changing environment in which we live.

As George Couros aptly said,

“Technology will not replace great teachers but technology in the hands of great teachers can be transformational”.

Kind Regards

Craig Carter

STAFF NEWS

Pamela Freeman has joined the Learning Support Team to cover Lucy McNaughton’s maternity leave until the end of 2019.  Pamela is a qualified, learning support teacher with many years’ experience in a number of schools both public and Independent.  She has already worked closely with Mrs McNaughton of the past two weeks and we look forward to sharing the next 5 months with her here at St George’s.

It is with great sadness we say goodbye to Mrs Dianne van Heerden. We thank her for all she has contributed during her 17 years with us.  She will be sorely missed and we wish her everything of the best as she begins her new role as National SABISA Co-ordinator for ISASA.

“One Day without Shoes” Outreach Initiative – Wednesday 22 May 2019

On Wednesday 22 May we will be celebrating “one-day without shoes”.  We would like to make our pupils more aware of the needs of others less fortunate who have to cope daily going to school without shoes.

We will be collecting donations of new or gently worn shoes for an underprivileged school, Walmer Primary School.  Any kind of shoes and any size will be most welcome. However, there is a great need for school shoes and takkies. Please tie the pair of shoes together with string before sending them to school.

Alternatively there is also an option to send R100 from which a new pair of school shoes will be purchased on your behalf to donate to Walmer Primary School. If you choose this option please send the exact money in a marked envelope addressed SHOE OUTREACH and hand in to your class teacher by Wednesday 15 May.

Pupils to please bring all shoe donations on Wednesday 22 May and take them directly to the school hall and place them on the stage.

We request that our pupils arrive and leave school on Wednesday 22 May wearing their school shoes. Shoes will be taken off for the duration of the school day.

Thank you all for your continuous support for our outreach projects throughout the year.

For further details please refer to your email or the d6 Communicator.
